Ecological restoration by the Western Pipeline project

In December 2008, the Western Pipeline started blending transportation of crude oil. Since the project was launched in 2004, relevant ecological restoration measures had been taken on an annual and phase basis. We monitored the samples in the protection area so as to grasp the changes and laws, and found out the scientific and effective way to protect and restore vegetation at the wilderness.

During the construction engineering, the environmental impacts at early, middle and final phases were analyzed through videotaped results for comparison and contrast, in order to improve our environmental management and protection measures, and serve for natural restoration. As for the wetland in Dabancheng, Xinjiang and other nature reserves in, the supervision headquarters enforced strict standards. Immediately after the line pipes were laid down and buried, we planted vegetations to restore the original landscape. We adopted a higher design grade, increased pipeline burial depth, enhanced anti-corrosion grade of the pipes, and installed cut-off valves to prevent oil leakage in accidents and protect underground and surface water along the environmentally sensitive areas like Urumqi River, Baiyang River, Dabancheng Wetland, Kan'erjing blocks, Shule River, and Jiayuguang water source protection area.
