Nitrous Oxide Emission Reduction Project of Liaoyang Petrochemical
In November 2007, the Nitrous Oxide Emission Reduction Project of Liaoyang Petrochemical was officially registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project at the 36th meeting of the UN CDM Executive Board.
Nitrous oxide is one of the six greenhouse gases defined by the Kyoto Protocol. The global warming potential of one metric ton of nitrous oxide is equivalent to that of 310 metric tons of carbon dioxide. By adopting advanced emission reduction technology, Liaoyang Petrochemical turns nitrous oxide generated by two sets of adipic acid processing units into nitrogen and oxygen to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At present, this project has been put into operation and can cut nitrous oxide emissions by more than 12 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent every year, about 10% of the total emission reduction volume of China's CDM project.
Background Link: CDM is a mechanism for cooperation between developed and developing countries to realize part of the greenhouse gas emission reduction obligations of developed countries after the Kyoto Protocol took effect in February 2005.
